REDHEAD
(Storm King / 2020)
After suffering a mysterious seizure, a woman discovers that anyone who comes within three feet of her dies… instantly
Marnie Young, an executive assistant in San Diego, is a sweet girl who wouldn’t hurt a fly. She’s also super lonely. But one night, without warning, Marnie has a violent seizure; co-workers recoil in horror as she writhes on the floor. Two days later, Marnie wakes up later in a hospital room. As her vision comes into focus, she sees… 17 doctors and nurses dead on the floor, blood splattered everywhere.
Soon she discovers the shocking truth: Marnie has become lethal, and everyone who comes within three feet of her dies instantly. Even worse: her so-called “kill zone” expands with every passing minute. So when the government response changes from we must help her to we must destroy her, Marnie is forced to go on the run. Her only ally: a mystery man who guides her (via smartphone) to a safe haven and possible cure.
But if she’s going to survive, Marnie will have to learn how to harness her bizarre “power” before it consumes the planet.
Redhead is a fast-paced (and weirdly prescient) SF thriller where the “Girl vs Monster” trope is turned on its head—and the Girl wrestles with the awful truth that she may be the Monster….
